Toyota Aygo X JBL Edition Review: Compact, Chic and Surprisingly Punchy

In a city where style, size, and sustainability count for everything, the Toyota Aygo X JBL Edition delivers on all fronts — and then some. A city car that looks as sharp as it sounds, this compact crossover makes a big impression thanks to its bold design, impressive efficiency and a seriously premium sound system.

We took the Aygo X JBL around London for a week to see how it fits into daily life — from tight parking spots in Soho to longer weekend drives beyond the M25. Here’s how it stacks up.

Design and First Impressions

The Aygo X JBL Edition is the style-conscious sibling of Toyota’s smallest city car. It wears a distinctive two-tone paint finish — exclusive to this edition — and bold accents that set it apart on the road. Compact in size but full of personality, it feels like the kind of car made for urbanites who want efficiency with edge.

The black roof, gloss-black 18-inch alloys and contrasting trim make it a genuine head-turner — especially in profile. It’s urban fashion on four wheels.

Verdict on looks: It’s cute, confident, and doesn’t blend in — and we mean that in the best way possible.

Interior and Comfort

Inside, the Aygo X JBL makes clever use of space. The cabin is compact, of course, but thoughtfully designed with comfortable seats, a raised driving position, and plenty of visibility. JBL branding throughout give the car a sporty, music-driven vibe — which works surprisingly well in this package.

There’s enough room for two adults up front to travel in comfort. Rear seats are tight, as expected in a city car, but ideal for short journeys or occasional passengers. Boot space comes in at 231 litres — enough for a weekend bag, some shopping, or a few fashion PR returns.

Best for: Daily city commutes, solo drivers, couples, or compact lifestyle living.

Infotainment and Sound System

Here’s where the JBL Edition earns its name. The sound system is seriously impressive for a car of this size. It features four speakers, a subwoofer, and a 300-watt amplifier — creating rich, immersive sound that’s ideal for everything from morning podcasts to Friday night playlists.

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come as standard via the 9-inch touchscreen, which is responsive and user-friendly. Pairing your phone is seamless, and the system responds well to voice commands and touch inputs alike.

In short: It sounds amazing. Genuinely one of the best audio setups you’ll find in a car at this price point.

Driving and Efficiency

The Aygo X is powered by a 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine, producing around 72hp. While it’s not designed to race, it handles the city with ease. Steering is light and nimble, and the compact dimensions make tight manoeuvres, parallel parking and multi-storey ramps a breeze.

It’s also ULEZ-compliant, meaning you can drive through central London without worrying about daily charges — a huge plus in 2025. On longer drives, it cruises happily at motorway speeds, although you may find it needs a bit more throttle when overtaking.

Fuel efficiency is another win: we averaged around 58–60 MPG, making it one of the most cost-effective petrol cars currently on the market.

Pros

Let’s talk highlights.

Easy to Park

With a turning circle just over 9 metres and compact proportions, parking is stress-free — even in notoriously tight London spaces.

ULEZ-Compliant

No ULEZ charges = major savings if you live or work within the expanded Ultra Low Emission Zone.

Strong MPG

Fuel economy hovers around 60 MPG in real-world use — ideal for commuters and cost-conscious drivers.

Incredible Sound System

Whether you’re into grime, jazz, or audiobooks, the JBL system delivers rich, studio-quality sound — a true standout.

Bold Design

Fashion-forward colours and details make this a car with personality. It doesn’t fade into the background.

Cons

Of course, no car is perfect.

Distracting Beeps

The Aygo X has a lot of safety alerts — lane-keep assist, speed limit warnings, and proximity sensors that can feel a bit over-sensitive. While they’re there for your safety, they can become distracting in busy, noisy city environments.

Needs More Power

The 1.0-litre engine is great for urban driving, but it can feel underpowered on faster roads or with a full load. If you’re planning regular motorway drives, you may want to consider alternatives with more punch.

Is It Fashion-Forward Enough for LDNFASHION Readers?

Absolutely. The Aygo X JBL Edition is not your average city runabout. It’s compact yet expressive, efficient but stylish — and ideal for creatives, freelancers, and fashion-lovers who want their vehicle to feel like an extension of their personal style.

It’s also a smart choice for sustainability-conscious drivers who aren’t ready to go full-electric, but still want low emissions, fuel efficiency, and ULEZ compliance.

Plus, the sound system alone turns every drive into a studio session — which, let’s be honest, is half the appeal.

Final Verdict

The Toyota Aygo X JBL Edition is a compact city car with a big personality. It’s easy to live with, fun to drive in the city, and surprisingly luxurious in its own right — especially when it comes to sound.

While it could benefit from a touch more power and fewer intrusive alerts, it nails its brief: fashion-friendly, budget-conscious, and built for modern urban life.

If you’re looking for a small car that makes a big impression, and you value music, efficiency and style, this might just be your perfect fit.

LDNFASHION Rating: 8/10

Great for city drivers, creatives and fashion-conscious commuters
ULEZ-ready, efficient and fun to drive
Audio system worth shouting about
Slightly underpowered for long motorway trips
Tone down the safety beeps, please!
